Visiting a yard sale: tips for buyers
Yard sales are treasure hunts on foot. With a little preparation you see more, walk less and go home with the things you actually wanted.
Plan before you go
Open the event map the evening before, search for what you are after (“Lego”, “tools”, “bikes”) and save the interesting stands with ★. Then plan your walk: the route connects your saved stands in a sensible order and shows distance and walking time. Save the map offline if the area has patchy mobile coverage.
What to bring
Small change is king – many sellers cannot break a fifty. Bring sturdy bags or a folding crate, a tape measure for furniture, and batteries if you want to test electrical items. A backpack keeps your hands free; a bike trailer or handcart pays off in villages.
Timing
Early birds get the best pieces – collectors are often there in the first hour. The last hour is the bargain hour: many sellers would rather cut the price than carry things back inside. If you are looking for something specific, go early; if you want cheap, go late.
On site
Be friendly, ask before rummaging through closed boxes, and haggle politely – a fair offer works better than a hard one. Respect that yards are private property: only enter where the market invites you in, and keep driveways and pavements clear. Tick off stands you have visited so you don’t walk the same street twice.
Nice extras
Many markets have food stands with coffee and cake (🍰 on the map), toilets and parking marked as points of interest. The community board is the event’s lost and found. And a “thank you” heart to a stand costs nothing but makes someone’s day.
