Selling at a yard sale: tips for your stand
Your own yard, a few tables, a box of coins – that is really all you need. These tips help you sell more, with less stress.
Before the day
Sort your things into three piles: sell, give away, dispose. Clean and repair what you can – a wiped toy sells noticeably better than a dusty one. Test electrical items and label them “works”. Register your stand early so visitors can plan their route, and list two or three item highlights (for example “Lego”, “stroller”) – those are searchable on the map.
Setting up
Put your tables where people can see them from the street, and leave room to walk around. Two folding tables are enough for most stands; if you have a lot of clothes, a clothes rail works better. Things at eye level sell better than things on the ground; use boxes or crates to add height. Group by category (children, kitchen, tools) instead of mixing everything, and keep a chair, water and sunscreen for yourself.
Money and prices
Bring plenty of small change – at least 30 to 50 euros in coins and small notes. A lockable cash box or a belt bag is safer than your pocket. Mark prices clearly – with price labels or a strip of masking tape it is quick and comes off without residue. Unmarked goods make people walk on rather than ask. During the market
Be approachable, greet people, but don’t hover. Bargaining is part of the culture – decide in advance where your limit is. If the forecast looks uncertain, a pop-up gazebo protects both your goods and you. Keep valuables and the cash box on your body, never on the table. If you offer coffee or cake, say so in your registration: food stands attract noticeably more visitors and get their own icon on the map.
Afterwards
Set your live status to “sold out” or “closed” when you finish, so visitors don’t walk in vain. Leftovers are best donated straight away – many charity shops and clothing banks are happy to take clean, usable items. And tick the box to be reminded about the next market in your area.
